Lesson Program Information

Our lesson program is the pride of Due West Ranch. Over 35 years of experience in multiple disciplines with an emphasis on safety. Lessons are offered 5 days a week for easy scheduling and our 30-horse herd allows our riders to gain experience and provides growth opportunities. You are also welcome to bring your horse. Our beautiful indoor and outdoor arenas allow our riders to enjoy time with the horse, regardless of the weather. Shows, clinics, camps, trail rides, and leases supplement our riders’ knowledge base.

Our goal is to provide our riders with a well-rounded equine education, including horse care and barn management. Lessons are offered for first-time riders of any age, building a foundation of safety and horsemanship skills. We also offer coaching for seasoned show exhibitors, up to the breed show level. Our experienced instructors teach hunt seat, western, jumping, barrels, and poles, as well as pattern events, horsemanship, and equitation. Our riders are encouraged to try different disciplines in order to develop into a well-rounded horseman. Our lead instructor and program director, Mary Sharp-Basler, has 25 years of experience as a classroom teacher in Olathe. Mary was also the coach of the University of Kansas Intercollegiate Equestrian Team for three years. Her 20-year experience as a horse show judge gives her riders an edge when it comes time to compete. She has trained and shown multiple breeds and in multiple disciplines. This extensive and varied background gives Mary the ability to tailor the lesson curriculum to meet the needs of individual riders and gives the lesson program a distinct advantage.

We will provide options to reschedule for illness or injury, however we are not able to carry makeup lessons over into the next month. It is the rider’s responsibility to schedule their makeup lesson within the same month.

Inclement weather is not a reason for cancellation as we have an enclosed arena and trainers on site. If you choose to cancel, payment for your reserved time is required. Due West Ranch has a rider weight limit of 180 pounds.

Our staff values each of you and counts it as a privilege to serve you. Our passion and mission is education and providing you the safest, most well-rounded instruction by our certified professional instructors. We look forward to continuing your equine education.
